Achieving one's goals always costs something. Change has a price that the client needs to be willing to pay. The client hereby adds value to the desired change. Is the client willing to spend his time and money on the coaching or therapy? Is the client willing to tolerate the changes in and resistance from his social system? In addition to a personal level, change always also has an interpersonal and system level. Does the client want to face the fear of change?

Hay (1993) is of the opinion that much change goes wrong because it is always said that you will “mourn” during a change. Change is mainly seen as a loss within that paradigm. Mourning theory, like that of Kübler-Ross (1969), seems commonplace in the theory and practice of many change experts. Within TA, change is seen more from the perspective of child development. Whoever observes children will note that they are always wanting to learn something different and something new. A child that is walking does not mourn the time when crawling was the only option.

There is commitment to do the work. There is often literally work to be done for those who go into coaching or therapy: practising new options for behaviour, performing tasks in order to further investigate the script, and more…
